Marlborough’s first baby for 2016 By Celeste Alexander Newborn baby Ruby Constance Vicars was only five minutes old when her first family photo was taken, and it’s one that has made headlines for being Marlborough’s first baby born in 2016. Baby Ruby made her entrance into the world on January 3 at 5:43pm at Wairau Hospital, two weeks early but healthy and ‘bright as a button’. Doting parents Trevor Vicars and Aimee-Lee Murdoch who live in Waikanae were spending their Christmas break with family in Blenheim when Aimee-Lee went into an early labour. “Ruby’s due date was January 17, although we were told she could come a week early,” Trevor says.

Welcome to the world baby Ruby Continued from page 1 “We had a great Christmas with family and a quiet New Year but late on January 1 Aimee began experiencing a few pains. “It all kicked off on the third and before we knew it our beautiful baby girl was in our
arms,” he says. Trevor jokes that baby Ruby “broke every line of their birthing plan”. “We planned for a water birth in Paraparaumu but ended up having Ruby in the South Island by caesarean section,” he laughs.
The inspiration behind Ruby’s name came from her great great grandmother Eileen Ruby Norris and great great great grandmother Constance Ruby Kidson who was known as Ruby all her life. The couple say once they are discharged from hospital they
are in no rush to return home and plan to stay with family while Aimee-Lee recovers. “We are so besotted with Ruby, it’s just amazing to have her here. “We are both looking forward to enjoying our little girl,” Trevor says.
Intruder in girl’s bed alarms police Police are searching for a man who was found in the bed of a girl during a suspected burglary on New Year’s Day. Police are investigating after the Budge Street incident that occurred around 4am on January 1. Detective Wayne Fransen says an unknown male has entered an address while the occupants were sleeping. He was then found in a girl’s bed by one of the occupants of the house who immediately
intervened. During the scuffle the intruder received cuts to his hand and arm before he fled the scene, running west on Budge Street, past Super Cheap Auto. Detective Fransen says police are now looking for a dark skinned male, possibly Polynesian, about 174cm in height with a shaved head. He was wearing a dark blue top with red lines around the middle that go all the way
around the body and had long sleeves with a zip up front, knee length shorts possibly black and wearing cream coloured jandals. The circumstances of this offending is clearly of concern to police who are appealing to the community for help in identifying this person. Anyone with information relating to this matter is urged to call Blenheim Police (03) 578 5279 or Crime Stoppers 0800 555 111.
Decades of service honoured By Jacob Page We l l k n ow n r u r a l Marlborough champion Brian Powell has received a Queen Service medal in the New Year’s Honours for services to heritage preservation and the community. Brian has been involved with Federated Farmers for many years, serving as representative to the Marlborough Acclimatisation Society and the Marlborough Meat and Wool Board and as president in 1997 and 1998. He hosted visits from primary

He has been instrumental to the restoration of a mud house occupied by early settlers and has collaborated with the Department of Corrections to allow those serving periodic detention to contribute to the building’s restoration. Bulldogs offer good time in Picton By Jacob Page Iconic 70s Kiwi band The Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band will play a free concert at the Picton Foreshore on Monday night to raise funds for child cancer. Event organiser Stuart Eyes says the band wanted to play a Picton show but had struggled to find a venue over the holiday period. However, he believed the foreshore was the perfect venue for a holiday time concert. “If the weather plays its part like it can then I can’t see why we can’t get 2000 to 3000 people,” he says. The concert will go from 4pm to 7pm with support acts Steve McDonald and Andrew McLennan. After winning the TV talent show ‘New Faces’ with original songs ‘Miss September’ and ‘Everyone Knows’ and beating Split Enz in the process, the band went fulltime professional in December 1973 and
played pretty much six nights a week until on the cusp of an international tour when they disbanded and carried on their teaching careers. They recorded four very successful singles - two top 10s (‘Miss September’, ‘Everyone Knows’) and a top 20 (‘Baby Get Out!’) – and a well received and critically acclaimed album – Bulldoggin’. One of the band’s members Brien “Toad” McCrea has used Marlborough as a venue for his child cancer fundraising in the past and was keen to do so again in conjunction with the release of the band’s new album. Stuart says there is potential for Picton to become a genuine holiday concert venue and surpass Blenheim particularly in the summer months. “Touring bands really like the appeal of the Picton Foreshore and Picton in general.

Christian book store to close Blenheim’s CBD has lost another business. The Christian Book and Music Centre, on Maxwell Rd, will close later this month after 60 years of trading in Blenheim. The Picton Foreshore will be rocking to a free concert by Kiwi 70s band The Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band on Monday between 4pm and 7pm.

New Year brings much needed rain By Jacob Page It might not be official yet but Blenheim is expected to be crowned the sunniest town in New Zealand for 2015 once NIWA releases its official data in the coming days. Blenheim had its driest year on record, with only two months exceeding the long term average rainfall according to statistics gathered by Rob Agnew at the Blenheim Weather station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre. Just 381mm of rain fell in the region in 2015, well down on the long term average of

643mm of rain. Only June and September had more rain than the average with those statistics dating back

to 1930. The wet start to 2016 brought with it some relief for domestic water levels. The New Year brought the first substantial rainfall in several months across the district. Between 25 and 45 mm fell over a two day period on the Wairau Plains and in East Coast areas, with heavier falls recorded in inland high country areas and up to 70 mm in parts of the Marlborough Sounds. This rainfall will go some way to replenishing soil moisture levels and will be very beneficial to pastoral and cropping farmers.
Any immediate return to hot, windy weather will diminish the effect of this rainfall over the next few weeks and more rain is required to alleviate what still has the potential to be a tough season for the farming community. The rain has provided further reprieve from domestic water restrictions in Renwick for the next week or two. The Wairau Aquifer which feeds Renwick’s water supply is rising in the wake of the rainfall and higher river flows. However everyone is asked to continue their good water conservation practices.

The free Riverside Jam event by the Taylor River is being held to give local artists a chance to show what they can do on a local stage. There will be giveaways, a sausage sizzle and spot prizes.

Why is it so difficult for owners of restaurants and cafes in Blenheim to understand that you need to be open over Christmas and New Year to cater for the tourists. It’s the busiest time of the year. Why own a restaurant if you are not prepared to provide a service? Well done to those who did open.

New Year disappointment A group of us went down to Liz Davidson place to hear the band and see the fireworks to celebrate the New Year in. What a huge let down, the band was ok but too loud, then wondered why people were leaving before 12.00. Some people knew where the fireworks were, so by the time we got to the bridge to see them we had missed most of them, then we went back to town the band had gone, what a huge disappointment. Think the events planner could do a better job next time. No wonder people go down to Picton, better bands, more entertainment and fun, don’t have to move for fireworks. Blenheim sort it out.

Dangerous practice Dear Ed, Over the past few weeks I have spent some time at a roadside residence at Waikawa Bay, just outside of Picton, where I have witnessed many times the very dangerous practice of adults and children sitting and even standing in boats being towed along the road. Possibly illegal the practice is frowned upon by safety groups, as if the towing vehicle
had to do an emergency stop these travellers would be thrown violently forward. Even if the unit is only travelling two or three kilometres to or from accommodation these people should be secured safely in the towing vehicle, definitely not in the boat. Respect for others? Dear Ed, On Thursday a couple of us from my workplace decided to go to a restaurant as a rare treat for ourselves for Christmas. We were served a lovely meal which we could of enjoyed had it not been spoilt by all the unruly children there that night, apart from about 3 families with very well behaved children. Unfortunately the rest of them were
extremely loud, so much so, we could not hold a conversation. A couple of small children were running around, most of the children were old enough to have been taught to respect others especially when out in public. I feel sorry for the restaurant staff if this is the norm. Manners please
Dear Ed, Thank our lucky stars we have independent newspapers like the “Blenheim Sun.” A few months ago, Les Whiteside wrote two excellent very telling articles on the Fairfax domination of New Zealand’s newspaper scene. It is so apparent and is getting worse. There is little difference between “The Press”, “Dominion-Post” and the “Marlborough Express.” Recently the three are even running the same crosswords and puzzles. With our local “Marlborough Express” over the holiday period, there was no editorial page, no opinion columns and no letters to the editor, which I always read. People say the CBD is dying but when the town is flush with tourists, places refuse to open. You can’t have it both ways. Holiday restaurant hours Dear Ed, It’s long overdue that Marlborough business owners, especially bars and restaurants woke up and realised Blenheim is a tourist town and needs to provide dining options over the holiday period. Walking around town, too many eating places were closed one day and open the next. No two days ever appeared the same.

Executing ‘plan B’ to perfection Peter Kemp’s road to secondary school teaching was anything but straight forward. In fact, he’s been much more than a teacher. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about how he arrived at Marlborough Boys’ College in 1983 and why he never burned out when so many in his transitions officer role did. He also talks about keeping up with change and what’s next now that his contract has not been renewed for 2016. Peter Kemp got as far as he wanted to go with plan A so he had decided to turn to his plan B – teaching. “I became a farm management consultant and valuer in the 1970s. “I graduated in 1967, went to Whangarei and was the youngest field officer appointed to be in charge in Kaitaia. “I thought it was the career I always wanted and I’d gone as far as I thought I could and I asked myself if I thought I could do this for the next 40 years. “So I switched to plan B which was teaching because I’d always had an interest in it. “I couldn’t get a job in a secondary school at the time and the wages were lousy so I went to a polytechnic in Waikato instead. “There was no fancy teacher training in those days,” Peter says. “They threw you in and if you survived for a year then they gave you some training.” When Peter came to Marlborough in 1983, he was appointed transitions co-ordinator at MBC which was a 10-hour a week role. “My wife got a job down here and we had holidays here and enjoyed it so I thought I’d give secondary teaching a go. “I filled in the rest of the time teaching at Nelson Technical Institute teaching agriculture and was industry training co-ordinator for a time, then I was the first tutor at the Budge Street NMIT site. “I badgered them to death about getting the campus in Blenheim which took longer than it should – about two or three years.” Peter says the transitions co-ordinator role
had changed immensely from when he first started 32 years ago. “The bare bones of it was we were given a bunch of no hopers nobody wanted to do anything with that I had to teach and organise work experience for. “I did a bit of relieving and taught horticulture and agriculture at the Boys’ College and I was made fulltime after about 10 years. It was a very unconventional road. Peter has been Gateway co-ordinator at MBC for the past five years. It aims to allow Year 12 and 13 pupils practical exposure to a job or trade they are interested in turning into a career. Peter says going away from the transition banner helped immensely as 80 per cent of kids don’t go to university. “You need good liaisons with employers in a community like Marlborough. “It’s also important to take students who are work ready, not just the ones the deans want to get rid of because we are trying to improve our (Gateway) reputation. My stock answer is that if a student isn’t doing any good at school what makes you think they’ll do any better (in the workforce)?” Peter says Gateway students are always encouraged to pass NCEA level two before leaving for their careers. He says the most satisfying thing is seeing students he has helped into careers now coming back to the school looking for present day students to help them in their business. “That’s immensely satisfying,” Peter says. “It comes full circle and it is a reassurance

that you are doing something right. At 72-years-old Peter has no thought of retiring fulltime. “At this stage I’ll take some time off and then look for some work after that. “I have just got a trout fishing licence so that’s something.”
Peter is happy to have left a 30-year mark on the role which sees it in much better shape than what it was when he was given it 30 years ago.

By Celeste Alexander Christmas Day was an extra special occasion for local celebrant Carol Taylor, who performed a ‘surprise’ wedding vow renewal ceremony for her close friends. Carol’s best friends, Phil and Elaine Helm travelled from the UK to tour New Zealand and spend Christmas Day with her and her husband, also named Phil. They have been friends for 40 years and Carol was even a bridesmaid for Phil and Elaine at their wedding 30 years ago. It was their ‘trip of a lifetime’ which they had been saving for, for five years. Two days before Christmas Phil told Carol he had been thinking of surprising Elaine with the ceremony, and asked her to join in on the surprise. “When he said he wanted to surprise Elaine with the ceremony on Christmas Day I thought it was such a neat idea, especially as she knew nothing of it,” Carol laughs. On Christmas morning everyone enjoyed their Christmas morning and lunch before Carol slipped away to prepare for the ceremony. She asked the couple to come outside and announced to Elaine what they were doing. “She was so surprised. There was lots of nervous laughter, crying and everyone got very emotional. “It was just delightful and Elaine’s face was a picture of happiness. It made their Christmas Day,” she says.

Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant Bienvenue, and welcome to Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant. It has been an ‘incredible’ summer for business owners Stephane Ughetto and Taryn Gilbert who have had a very busy Christmas and New Year holiday period. Stephane says January 2 was his busiest day since purchasing the business in 2014, with around 700 people through the doors and 500 coffees served. “We have never been that busy, it was incredible,” he smiles. Situated in the heart of Blenheim, Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant has carved a niche for itself in the hospitality market, combining both the cafe style day service and a specialty French patisserie, Le Delice, with European style evening dining. “People really love the location and regularly comment on their experiences which is always nice to hear,” Stephane says. The evolving menu has been a source of pride for Stephane who has been implementing his own French culture into the business. “We are always tweaking,” he laughs. “Seeing what works, taking on board what our customers are saying and of course always striving for the best service we can offer,” he says.
Le Delice which is located near the entrance is going strong, particularly in the last six months, he says. This is the customer’s first French experience upon entering but certainly not their last. The decor, the French music played in the evenings and of course the influence found within the food continues to delight. Stephane says he is currently working on the new menu which he plans to introduce toward the end of March. “Through this menu we will be giving ourselves a bit more identity with more French influence which I am very excited about. “I like to keep the menu fresh and interesting,” he smiles. Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant has a number of seating options. Outside customers can enjoy the view of the Taylor River on the terrace which has recently been extended and can seat up to 70. The inside dining area can cater to a maximum of 178, and upstairs in the private dining area up to 30 can be seated. Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant is a popular choice for group bookings and private events, so speak to staff about what they can do for your next special celebration.

New year, same issues for fire fighters Rural fire crews in Marlborough spent the first hours of the new year fighting a scrub fire in Marlborough but their swift response meant that it burned over only about three hectares before being brought under control. The fire was on a private property at Kaituna, just beyond Renwick and off SH6 which links Blenheim and Nelson. The site of this morning’s fire was only about a kilometre from the Onamalutu forest fire which caused major damage in February 2015. Fire authorities don’t yet know how this latest fire began. McNamara says the call was received about 12.15am, just a couple of hours after crews had dealt with a smaller fire. The Kaituna property owners were evacuated from their house as a precaution while four crews battled the blaze. Two helicopters were brought in at day break. However, all crews were expected to pull out by later this afternoon. While there was no major damage caused by this fire, fire fighting costs would run to $10,000 - $20,000. He says it was yet another signal to everyone that Marlborough was at a high risk of fire due to the extremely dry state of the region.

A Gayle in a tea cup Chris Gayle’s amorous interview following an innings in the Australian Big Bash cricket competition has been blown out of proportion. The charismatic West Indian batsman was interviewed following his 41 during the competition by Australia’s channel 10 Mel McLaughlin when things took a strange turn. The opening batsman asked McLaughlin if she wanted to come out for a drink with him, before quickly adding “don’t blush baby”. “I wanted to come and have
an interview with you as well, that’s the reason why I’m here,” he began. “Just to see your eyes for the first time. It’s nice.” McLaughlin was clearly uncomfortable but I don’t think she or anyone else should be offended by it. Gayle didn’t objectify her, he just misjudged a situation. Let’s be honest most interviews with sports stars are boring, offer little insight and are full of clichés. I think Gayle tried to get a laugh and be entertaining and he got it wrong.
However for people to call him sexist and to claim it’s a setback for women in the media is an absolute joke. It seems to me like political correctness gone too far yet again in the 21st century. Life needs characters, Gayle is one of those people, he just badly misjudged the situation. The Big Bash League and Twenty20 cricket in general is about entertainment and having fun, clearly Gayle thought he was providing both, but now he’s $10,000 lighter in the pocket and a little more wary of what he says in public.

Wheeler returns from injury
East Coast will join the Marlborough senior rugby competition in 2016. The Coasters’ participation has come about through the combined efforts of the Awatere and Kaikoura clubs, who both fielded division two teams in 2015. The two clubs will continue to function as usual it’s just a move for top flight rugby.
If world rugby ratifies the planned rule changes for the competition, it will also mean new interpretations at the breakdown. Six point tries on menu for Makos Rule changes to next season’s national provincial rugby championship could help the Tasman Makos because of their attacking styles. It was announced earlier this month, New Zealand’s top domestic competition would trial six points for a try instead of five while bringing the value of a penalty goal down from three to two points.
Marlborough Trail Rides will be putting on a Honda Kids Camp Out Marlborough event over Waitangi Weekend next month. The event which will be held in Ward will be the first of its kind for the organisation. MTR’s Daniel Morton says they’re keen for as many kids
under 14 as possible to give trail riding a go. The location is a farm in Ward with rolling paddocks which Daniel believes will be an ideal spot for trails of all levels. He says there will be trail loops marked from 1km to 8km depending on the skill level of each rider.
The iconic King and Queen of the Withers will be run tomorrow. Athletes will run or walk the popular 10k hill race in the Wither Hills Farm Park. Entries on the day are accepted from 7am at the Rifle Range car park on Taylor Pass Road/Forest Park Drive.
Twenty20 back for 2016 The weather affected Marlborough Twenty20 cricket competition will resume tonight, once again, weather permitting. Two rounds have been lost due to weather already this year and the forecast does not look promising for matches tonight.
